Haunted History of the Oviatt Penthouse!

Couple Octobers ago, I wrote this post about former Bunker Hill resident James Oviatt, because at the time there was to be a tour of the Oviatt Building’s famed Olive Street penthouse, focusing specifically on its spookiness.

Well, the time has come for me to inform you that this season is similarly graced by a tour of the former digs of “Bunker Hill Boy Made Good” James Oviatt:

I should mention as well that this time, there will be an incredible display of vintage Hallowe’en costumes, from the collection of that brilliant wife o’ mine, Nicole! Plus cocktails! Music! Don’t miss the event of the season!

  1. I am very interested in finding out more about the haunting of the Oviatt Penthouse, as I used to work for Ratkovich & Bowers in the early 80s after they bought the bldg and put it into the National Landmark Registry.

In my research, I found Wayne and Rudy Perez, (my boss), have passed on. Bob Bowers was still living a couple years ago when I spoke to his son in Newport Beach. I am moving downtown next week, and plan to revisit the building and remanice the wonderful days I worked for these partners and the projects each one had as young real estate developers. I was a clerk & Notary Public in their accounting department.

I got to enjoy walking downtown to several different banks depositing monies I had in several different money bags. No one had the slightest clue just how much I had on me. I didn’t even know!

The Penthouse was the final floor above our office floor. I had only seen two times in my years there. I remember that bed so well. I did not venture thru all of it as it I recall, it was well-preserved in the natural form, but not preserved for public display or tours. I do not recall anyone discussing that it was haunted in my short years there.

The restaurant that was operating on the main floor was eloquent to say the least. I never ventured into the restaurant, but was told the faucets in the bathroom were made with real cold plating. Hollywood was always shooting scenes for t.v. cop series and movies outside of the bldg and in the inside using the lobby. The Star Track t.v. series stars frequented the restaurant. Mr Zoolu was a repeated customer at restaurant. William Shatner at the time was playing T.J. Booker, (a cop), and the director loved Olive St a lot as there were film crews tying up traffic.

I am intrigued to read up more on the Penthouse.

One other place I do know haunting (odd encounters), the partner made known to all in office. They also renovated the Wiltern Theater and did the same justice to it also. Weird things happened there that spooked them a couple times. I can’t recall exactly the deal, but it was on the stage towards the back.
